Where to start? What to say? What not too? A sense of joy, solitude, despair and fun among other things run through one’s mind while watching Mysskin’s ‘Nandhalala’. After a long wait comes the movie which is nothing short of a marvel on screen.

At a time when commercial movies are considered watchable, Mysskin has rendered a film that combines all elements of movie making, which makes one gel with each and every character on screen.

A taut screenplay, scintillating shots and above all the flawless background score by Illayaraja sets up the momentum. A rare attempt on big screen, ‘Nandhalala’ goes on to say loudly that all hope is not lost in Tamil cinema.

Such movies show that the industry is still a director’s medium and those who know the language of cinema can render a classic without compromising on commercial values.

One of the very few full-length road films in Tamil cinema, the story of ‘Nandhalala’ is simple and straight forward. It’s the journey of two persons seeking to see their mothers, who had left them long back.

They come across various faces, emotions and nerve-wrecking experiences in the journey. A sense of joy and sorrow runs through our veins as we start to travel along with them.

Unlike Mysskin’s earlier attempts, which were loaded with action and naach-gaana, ‘Nandhalala’ kindles our soul straightaway. The complex characters, simple human faces and the funny encounters sustain interest all through. The movie doesn’t boast of macho-man stuff, lengthy dialogues or crass comedy. It is straight from the heart to touch our brains.

Baskar Mani (Mysskin), a mentally-challenged youth manages to escape from an asylum with the sole motive to reach his village and question his mother whey she dumped him there.

Aggi (Ashwath Ram), a school student brought up by his grand mother, comes to know that his mother is working in a village. So without informing his grand mother, he leaves the house on a journey to meet her.

At one point, the mentally-challenged Baskar and Aggi meet. They become friends. They set out together to fulfill their dreams. The travel they make on the road gives them many experiences.

On the way, the two comes across one commercial sex worker (Snighdha), who has none to care for. She joins them. They meet contrasting incidents in their villages. Eventually a shock awaits both Baskar and Aggi. The value of true love and care is underlined in a riveting climax.

Three cheers to Mysskin not just as a director but as an actor too. He brings out right emotions. Enacting a mentally challenged youth is no easy task. Especially towards the second half, Mysskin makes us cry and relate ourselves with his character.

Ashwath Ram impresses as a young boy yearning for mother's love. He is cool and casual in his act. The young kid has understood the burden on his shoulders and delivered it well.

Snighdha as commercial sex worker lives up to her character. Without makeup, she is there evoking right emotions. A host of new faces in the movie identify themselves with their roles. Watch out for actress Rohini and Nasser playing cameo.

The scene stealer is Illayaraja. The maestro has given flesh and blood to the movie. One wonders when was the last time we have seen the background score in a film evoking tears in our eyes. His good use of symphony orchestra is apt. Watch out for an 'Amma' song by the Isaignani in the movie.

Cinematographer Mahesh Muthusamy brings perfectly what Mysskin has conceived. The wide lens used by him to narrate the tale of two on a journey is amazing. His camera speaks a lot.

Due credit should be given to Ayngaran International for gathering guts to produce a film that is far from the madding crowd. Mysskin seems to have taken Tamil cinema to a new height. Hopefully the rest will take a cue and follow him. The film may be slow, but it is steady and wins the race too.

Sundar C seems to have started from where he left in ‘Thalainagaram’. Quite like his maiden heroic venture, ‘Nagaram’ too is a story of a convict, who wants to live a reformed life, but forced to go back to his old ways.

Movies directed by Sundar C always had good mix of all commercial ingredients. So is ‘Nagaram’ with comedy, romance and action. Though it is more similar to ‘Thalainagaram’, the scene is set in a different place here.

Sundar, who has directed the film besides playing the lead role, has captured the functioning of underworld operating in Chennai, mafia that controls harbour and fishing hamlets, in a vivid way. He has handled a huge star cast and the film moves at a fairly interesting pace.

Gate Selvam (Sundar C) is stabbed and is struggling for life. In the hospital bleeding profusely he recalls his past. He is convicted for a crime and is sentenced to five years imprisonment.

A senior police officer Sakkarai Pandi (Bose Venkat), who is also Selvam's childhood friend, helps him come out of the prison. The jail life brings a change in his life and Selvam decides to earn in right way and lead a peaceful life.

But the society is not willing to allow him to do so. Specially his friend Sakkarai Pandi in the pretext of friendship uses him for all his unlawful activities. Selvam comes across Bharathy (Anuya), a junior film artiste. Coming to know about her life and her courteous nature, Selvam falls for her.

Meanwhile, Sakkarai Pandi incurs the wrath of Kadhar Bhai (Sreenivasan) for trying to take away huge haul of ganja from him. It’s now cat and mouse game between Sakkarai Pandi and the gang.

Selvam goes hammer and tong to help save his friend. But when he comes to know the true nature of his friend, all things go awry. What happens in Selvam's life after that forms the climax.

Sundar C plays the role with consummate ease. He is good at romance and action sequences. Anuya is tailor-made for the character. Sreenivasan revels as baddie, while Bose Venkat does his part well.

Vadivelu as Style Pandi, in a separate comedy track, evokes laughter. George, Vichu, Ponnambalam, Besant Ravi and Nalini also form part of the cast. Music by Thaman is foot-tapping. But the loud re-recording could have been avoided. Thalapathy Dinesh’s stunts deserve special mention.

Produced by Kushboo Sundar, ‘Nagaram’ is bit lengthy in the second half. It’s a new wine in an old bottle. But the taste is good, however.

Director Solairaja, who made many a popular serial on small screen, has tested waters in the tinsel town with a film that speaks about the egos, friendship and camaraderie among children.

Set in the backdrop of a dance competition between students, the movie harps about the innocence of children, their agony and frustration.

Though Solairaja has tried his hand at such an interesting theme, what the movie lacks is the way the director has executed it. It sounds clichéd and predictable at many places.

Sanjeev of 'Kulir 100 Degree' plays the lead role while debutant Chetna is cast as his ladylove. The film boasts of star cast that includes Sampath Kumar, Master Rinson, Master Sachin, Singamuthu, Nellai Siva and Manobala among others.

The movie begins in a school campus where Surya (Sanjeev) comes to join as aerobics instructor. The school is owned by Sampath (Sampath Kumar), the chairman of a group of educational institutions, and an influential man in town.

Surya develops affinity with Diya (Chetna), a relative of Sampath who is also a dance teacher there. Meanwhile, a poor boy Karthick (Rinson) manages to get admission in the school thanks to Surya.

An intelligent boy, he incurs the wrath of Siddharth (Sachin), son of chairman of the school who studies in the same class. Karthik’s mother falls sick and he needs Rs. Five lakh to do surgery for her. Comes a dance contest carrying cash award of Rs 10 lakh which Karthik wants to do. Siddharth comes in between and poses hurdles.

Eventually with Surya’s help Karthik gets admitted to another school. Surya, Karthi and others take it as challenge and prepare themselves for the competition. Meanwhile Diya walks out from the house to be with Surya. It's finals between Siddharth and Karthik and the best wins.

The movie boasts of enough dance sequences. There are some fun elements in the form of children getting ready for dance contests. Sanjeev looks cool and suave while Chetna is okay. Sampathraj as usual does his job well. All the kids have played well.

Music by Sriram Vijay is good especially the theme music. Premshankar’s cinematography is breezy. All said 'Neeyum Nanum' is like watching a dance contest on a television channel which impresses you in parts.

Expectations ran high on ‘Naan Mahan Alla’ for it comes after a hat-trick success for Karthi (‘Paruthi Veeran’, ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ and ‘Paiyaa’) and an impressive debut by director Sussendhran (‘Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu’).

What more, the movie’s title does evoke a curiosity for it is inspired by a yesteryear hit of Superstar Rajnikanth. Living up to all hype is ‘Nan Maahan Alla’, produced by Gnanavelraja’s Studio Green and released by Dhayanidhi Alagiri’s Cloud Nine Movies.

What begins as a light-hearted fare ends with adrenaline-rushing action with blood and gore, the two things which are of late considered in Tamil cinema as essential ingredients for a commercial fare.

Jeeva (Karthi) is a cool youth who lives life in his own way. A typical Chennai youngster, for him everything is friends and fun. His father Jayaprakash (Jayaprakash), a call taxi driver showers all love and affection on him. They lead s simple life and they derive happiness in whatever they do.

One day, Jeeva comes across Priya (Kajal Agarwal) in a wedding ceremony. After few interesting encounters, they realise that they share a great rapport and propose to each other. When all things seem to go well, a murder attempt on Jeeva’s father disturbs everything.

Jeeva’s father had to witness a girl being taken by a gang in his car. The girl gets killed and the gentleman decides to knock the doors of justice. Sensing trouble, the gang eventually murders him.

The death of his father shatters Jeeva. He vows to revenge the killers. He sets out on a mission to identify the culprits and goes running around the town baying for their blood. How he avenges the killers form the rest.

Karthi is right there in almost all frames. He reminds one of Karthik of ‘Mounam Ragam’ days in the first half. Resembling the boy-next-door, he leaves an impact with his spontaneous, cool, casual looks and he speaks straight from his heart.

Giving him right company is Kajal Agarwal. Jayaprakash, after donning the role of a menacing villain in ‘Vamsam’, has played a caring and a dotting father. Soori of ‘Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu’ does tickle the funny bone in you. The rest of the cast including Lakshmi Ramakrishnan, Neelima, Raviprakash and Rajivan are adequate

Director Sussendhran has proved Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu is not a stroke of luck. The director has yet again proved he is a master story teller. The way he blends serious incidents for a commercial entertainer is vey new. He deserves all credit for keeping up the tempo of the film breezy till the every end. As it was in his earlier film here also Suseendhran makes a hard hitting statement with a superb climax fight. Surely this director has moved up on the expectation ladder. Just can’t wait for your next film Sussendhran Sir.

Due credit should go to Yuvan Shankar Raja. The rock star has come up with a couple of catchy tunes, especially ‘Oru Malai Neram…’. His re-recording adds more strength to the script. Madhie’s cinematography and Kasi Viswanathan’s editing add value to the work on screen. Anal Arasu deserves all kudos for stunt sequences that resemble close to reality.

On the flip side, the movie’s pace slackens towards the second half. It needs some urgent trimming. Also the events unfold at predictable way especially towards the climax. All said, ‘Nan Mahan Alla’ should be a movie to cherish for Karthi fans. A commercial entertainer that is impressive in most parts.

Every action has equivalent opposite reaction is Newton's Law. Seemingly inspired by his 'finding' S J Suryah and his director Thai Muthuselvan have dished out a racy and riveting fare that lives up to the title.

A thrilling movie, it has enough elements in it to make one glued to their seat. A S J Suryah's movie is incomplete without right commercial elements. Keeping that in mind, Thai Muthuselvan has laced the thriller with naach - gaana and typical S J Suryah humour elements in the story.

A revenge story that begins and end in just a couple of hours in a man's life is something new. Treading a different path, the director come out clean convincing the audience. Though the story is old, the trick lies in its presentation.

Guru (Suryah), a fashion designer falls in love with Priya (Sayali Bhagat), an anchor with a music channel. On the eve of their wedding, Priya's boss and the television channel owner JP (Rajeev Krishna), who lusts after her, brutally rapes and kills her and makes it look like a suicide.

Guru vows to bump off JP on the first death anniversary of Priya. He does enough homework to nail JP. With the help of his friend working in the channel, he meticulously plans for a year and execute things in just two hours- proving Newton's third law every action has an equal but opposite reaction.

S J Suryah has improved leaps and bounds as far as acting is concerned. He has worked hard to shed his playboy image to do an angry Youngman’s role. Shayali Bhagat fills the oomph factor. But the real scene stealer is Rajeev Krishna. He had impressed everyone playing a bubbly young man in Aaha almost a decade ago. He is back after a hiatus to spell surprise on everyone playing a rich and sophisticated baddie who goes hammer and tongs to save his life.

On the flip side, the songs are a big brake to the fast screenplay. Had the second half had more of the cat and mouse game between Suryah and Rajeev, Newtonin Moonram Vidhi would have been more racy.
